Telephone genetic counselling

Genetic counselling is a two-way conversation that can help you to understand genetic information and what it can mean for you and your family.

Genetic counsellors are health professionals with training in genetics, counselling and health communication.

Our genetic counsellors are trained to provide information about genetics in plain language and to help you understand how genetics may impact your health. Genetic counsellors can also help you to understand how genetics could impact your family, as well as provide you with emotional and practical support.

Our genetic counselling process

Our genetic counsellors provide genetic counselling by telephone, so you can speak to our team no matter where you are. Each conversation is unique, but common topics we may discuss with you are:

  • the genetic research you participated in and the types of results they return.
  • your preferences for learning your personal research result
  • actions you can take to manage your health.

Our genetic counsellors are trained to help you make a decision about your research results. You can take all the time you need to make a decision. Not everyone chooses to access their genetic information, so don’t worry if you are unsure about how you feel. The genetic counselling process can help you to work this through.

If you choose to receive your result, the genetic counsellor can give you that information over the phone. They will also discuss what the result means for your health, and the health of your family, as well as next steps. The genetic counsellor will support you to find an appropriate specialist clinic to help you manage your health.
